Hello everyone! I am Victor Zhao, I have been working in the field of sensory products for many years. I have come into contact with many products and recommended suitable and useful products to many merchants and friends. Recently, a friend asked if there are any good sensory products recommended for adults with autism. Let’s discuss it together today.
In the past, we may have paid more attention to autistic children. But these children are also growing up and becoming adults. They may no longer be suitable for playing with toys with childish colors or small sizes. However, their sensory problems still exist. In daily life, they all need to have their own independent lives and independent rooms, as well as sensory products suitable for them.
Combined with some products I am going to recommend to you now. Of course, these products cannot be completely separated from those for autistic children. There must be some products that are recommended for both children and adults. I hope these things will be helpful to them.
First of all, my suggestion is that we can directly transform the rooms of these adults into multisensory rooms. In this way, various demands can be met, and they can also feel calm in their independent rooms. For such a multisensory room, we can create it from multiple aspects such as vision, touch, and hearing. (I have less contact with products in terms of smell and taste, so I won’t recommend them to you.)
Below, we refer to adults with autism as our friends. I hope to treat them like ordinary people.
1、Vision:
If our friends need some visual sensory stimulation, then bubble lights, fiber optic lights, shaking lights, and liquid timers are good choices.
These products can bring visual experiences of different colors. At the same time, with some visual tracking, our friends can better stabilize their emotions and immerse themselves in such a visual space.
If you don’t want these visual stimuli, then a dark tent will be a good choice. Let them enter such a closed (breathable) space and feel the tranquility brought by the night.
2、Motion/Proprioceptive/Vestibular/Tactile:
This can be divided into two aspects: calm and stimulating. Regarding calmness, weighted blankets, pads, and peapods are highly recommended. When our friends need to rest, these products can give them a sense of enclosure and security.
If it is for tactile stimulation, then fingertip spinners, fidget pads, therapy putty, wiggle seats, liquid sensory tile, and other products are recommended. These can bring sufficient stimulation to our friends’ fingers, hips, feet, etc., allowing them to form corresponding sensations and reflexes and improve sensory abilities.
3、Hearing:
Hearing can be divided into two directions: auditory stimulation and auditory weakening.
If it is auditory stimulation, then wind chimes (I liked listening to the sound of wind chimes very much when I was a child. It is very crisp and makes people feel very comfortable. Of course, I also like to hear it now), a music box with multiple light music pieces (for example, having some music by Bandari is a very good choice), and a sleep light with white noise (which can also have visual stimulation or not). These can all make our friends feel calm.

If one is sensitive to sound and doesn’t want to hear it, then a soundproof earmuff will be the best choice.
Incorporating these things into our sensory room and using different sensory products at different times and in different situations will have very good effects. It will enable our friends to better integrate into life and get along more harmoniously with others.
Appendix: What is the purpose of a sensory toy?
A sensory toy may be used to relax, stimulate/fixate, energize, or simply for recreational purposes. Sensory toys can be powerful tools to address a specific sensory need or to provide a fun, engaging break. They can also be useful tools for those looking for stress relief, to refocus attention, or to release some excess energy.
